An introductory course into traditional North American craft of rug hooking. Dating back to pioneer times, rug hooking recycles common materials into unitarian objects for the home. This course will teach the original technique used in rug hooking and allow you to create beautiful textile art pillows that will brighten your home.
Each student will complete one 12 x 16 inch linen pillow hooked with three multicolored circles. Students will be allowed to pick their own colors and material for pillow backing. Students will learn about basic design elements (emphasis on color, contrast, and texture) and learn some traditional geometric fiber art designs (hit and miss, cat’s paw, log cabin, etc.). Students will also learn the correct hooking and finishing techniques to complete their pillow.
All materials (including a reusable rug hook and wooden quilting hoop to keep) are included in the cost of the class (discount if you do not need a rug hook or hoop). It is helpful for students to have had some sewing experience. Having a sewing machine at home is helpful but not necessary.
Typically, students complete about 75% of their project during class time. Students will be given lessons on how to construct their pillows, although it is expected that students will finish this project on their own.
This class will need at least two students to run. Email me at info@loopbyloopstudio if you have any questions about class time or availability. I am also available to teach this course to small groups at a time that is convenient to your group (2 or more). Email me for more info.
